This is My Sword: Creed of a Warrior

This is meant in tribute to the USMC creed ‘This Is My Rifle,’ which many of us probably only know from Full Metal Jacket. I have immense respect for what Marines do and who you are as men. If this is in any way offensive to Marines, I sincerely apologize. Please let me know and I can take this down immediately.

Read through these words like you’re trying to interpret a poem. Whoever wrote the original…very well done.

This is my sword. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

My sword is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life.

My sword, without me, is useless. Without my sword, I am useless. I must cut my sword with a force that comes from within. I must think faster and smarter than my enemy who is trying to cut me down. I must strike him before he strikes me. I will strike first.

My sword and myself know that what counts in a battle and in life it is not the number of times we rear back and swing, the noise of our battle cry, nor the beauty of perfectly performed technique. We know that it is the hits that count. We will hit.

My sword is human, even as I, because it is my life. Thus, I will learn it as a brother. I will learn its weaknesses, its strength, its parts, its accessories, its grip, its blade and its point. I will ever guard it against the ravages of weather and damage as I will ever guard my legs, my arms, my eyes and my heart against damage. I will keep my sword clean and ready and sharp. We will become one with each other.

Before God, I swear this creed. My sword and myself are the defenders of my honor. The defenders of my family. The protectors of everything I hold of value. We are the masters of our enemy. We are the saviors of my life.

So be it, until victory is mine and there is no enemy, but peace.
